IntendedIntended Use and Description
Type 1: Indoor use primarily to provide protection against contact with the enclosed equipment and against a limited amount of falling dirt.
Type 3: Outdoor use to provide a degree of protection against wind blown dust and wind blown rain; undamaged by the formation of ice on the enclosure. (Gasketed screw cover.)
Type 3R: Outdoor use to provide a degree of protection against falling rain; undamaged by the formation of ice on the enclosure. (Drip Shield screw cover.)
Type 4: Either indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection against falling rain, splashing water, hose directed water; undamaged by the formation of ice on the enclosure.
Type 4X: Either indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection against falling rain, splashing water, hose directed water; undamaged by the formation of ice on the enclosure; resists corrosion.
Type 12: Indoor use to provide a degree of protection against dust, dirt, fiber flyings, dripping water, and external condensation of non-corrosive liquids.
Type 13: Enclosures constructed for indoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against incidental contact with the enclosed equipment to provide a degree of protection against falling dirt; against circulating dust, lint, fibers, and flyings; and against the spraying, splashing, and seepage of water, oil, and non-corrosive coolants.
